“Clima”, to any gabachos reading this, means “climate”. This will make sense on more than one level for those who discover this latest addition to our rapidly expanding digital camp. Mexico City’s own Hugo Duran came to us by way of his inebriated rambling vocal contributions to Mikel Stavostrand’s “Time For Romance” EP. His groggy, sensual delivery lent those tracks a lazy playfulness that he only hints at on this. With an effervescing intro that gently submerges the listener into it’s inky depths, “Clima” begins a winding trek through Duran’s many influences and emotions: fluorescent drones, loungey percolations, blissful, pensive, and finally, climactic. Hugo has done something with his debut that few veterans have accomplished: keep each track distinct enough for dance floor variety while maintaining a narrative arc. Well on his way to detailing his own sound, we are—as always—happy to be here at the beginning.
